But Moses said, “It is not the sound of the cry of victory, Nor is it the sound of the cry of defeat; But I hear the sound of singing.” Exodus 32:18 AMP

Today I want to talk about music because music plays a certain importance in our lives. From when we were young, and even in our mothers womb, our mothers and fathers may have sung to us and may have placed music in the background, not realizing that music plays a huge role when in the womb.

I remember my mother telling me when I was still in the womb how her and my father went to a party or gathering of some sort, and she sat by a speaker that blasted loud music. She mentioned that I reacted to it, as I was kicking in her stomach reacting to the beat of the sound of the song.

I want us to go to Exodus 32:18 AMP, which I listed above. Here’s the verse again:

But Moses said, “It is not the sound of the cry of victory, Nor is it the sound of the cry of defeat; But I hear the sound of singing.”

Then Moses and Joshua went down and saw the Israelite, God’s people, dancing and singing by and around the false calf I would assume. I wanted to also read the previous verses Exodus 32:7-8, in which the WORD says,

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down at once, for your people, whom you brought up from the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves. They have quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a molten calf, and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said, ‘This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt!’ ”

So I want to relate this to the music you listen to. As you should know that certain music can make huge impact in our life. And the music we listen to determines how it influences our lives. I will post a video on the bottom that shows how the music industry uses music to manipulate and influence people. And plus, the truth shall make you free.

You see, music comes from GOD, but because we have an enemy called satan, he uses music to manipulate the people in how they think, feel, and do. So what you listen to is not just feel good music, it can be detrimental to your soul! For music influences us in various ways you are not aware of and if you continue in this path, it is not going to do you any good.

I brought up Exodus 32:7-8 because it mentions that the Israelite set up a calf and started worshiping and sacrificing themselves to it. Do you know that music can lead you to worship false idols and lead you to sacrifice yourself to it?! What is then, it is now but it may look different. Nothing is new under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9).

Let’s begin with love songs. Do you know that false idols is found in love songs? When you’re talking about your love, how much your heart is broken, you are making yourself a worshiper of idols. What you’re singing here is a worship to a relationship, to your self, to something that the LORD desires you to come to Him for, not to replace Him with a song!

In Hosea 7:14, the WORD says,

They do not cry out to Me from their heart When they wail on their beds [in unbelieving despair]; For the sake of grain and new wine they assemble themselves [as if worshiping Baal]; They rebel against Me.

They appealed to their gods, just as you are appealing to the music you listen to.

Coming back to the Exodus 32:7-8, the LORD was angry with His people because in verse 8, they turned aside from the way which He commanded them. Brothers and Sisters, if you are listening to Beyonce, Kid Cudi, Niki Minaj, and other similar people, then you have turned aside from the LORD and His commandments.

Again, what you listen to have a certain influence in your life, in how you dress, think feel, and do! Ask yourself, what has these songs led you to do lately? How I have been dressing up? How have I been speaking to myself and others lately? How have I talked to myself in the sight of the LORD?

The LORD is telling you this: Stop listening to these music or your lives shall be like them, in a way that is disrupted and a mess.

The WORD says in Romans that when the people continue to sin, He, the LORD, gives them to their sin (Romans 1:24-25). And there are stories in the bible that talks about the LORD giving His people to their sin, and their lives did not turn out good.

But the LORD does not want you to do that. Again, there are music that influences you and the ones that should influence you are the songs directed to the LORD. David, in the book of Psalm said,

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. – Psalm 42:5 NIV

So our hope when we feel a certain way, should focus our praise unto GOD. So instead of love songs, praise and worship the LORD your GOD. Music comes from the LORD, so therefore songs should reflect and focus on the One who knows our hearts better than we do!

When Moses went and heard the sound of singing, seeing that the Israelite worshiped an idol, he threw the 10 commandments on the ground. He threw the very thing that would bring them to alignment with God’s will and way and now has to deal with their sin.

We are called to worship the LORD in His Holiness, and what we do when it comes to music is the same. Listen to music that revere the LORD in His Holiness. GOD is full of grace and mercy, but we do not abuse His grace to do wrong. Look over your songs: do they praise the LORD or praise false idols/self? Ask for the Holy Spirit to help you and lead you into all truth.

Bless the LORD.
